Dating reality shows are a popular genre Apple TV has entirely avoided. And while its newly announced series, The Last Person on Earth, is being billed as a “documentary series” rather than “reality,” it’s the streamer’s first dating show nonetheless.
The Last Person on Earth to feature renowned couples therapist Esther Perel for ‘innovative experiment’

Esther Perel is a renowned couples therapist and NYT bestselling author in the domain of relationships.
Perel is also at the center of Apple TV’s newly announced 8-part dating documentary series: The Last Person on Earth.
Per the press release: ”In the series, couples who appear to be opposites are expertly paired by Perel and a team of matchmakers and therapists, before embarking on an adventure in one of the world’s most romantic and remote destinations.”
It sounds a lot like a reality series, but without the baggage that comes from the reality brand. I suspect Apple’s approach to a dating series is going for an ‘elevated’ feel, thus the ‘documentary series’ label.
Here’s Perel’s personal pitch describing what to expect:
No release date has yet been announced for the series, but it will likely premiere sometime in 2027.
On a related note, yesterday Apple announced it is adapting bestselling author Rebecca Yarros’ new romance novel into a TV series. Clearly, the streamer wants to push expand beyond its current core genres of sci-fi, comedies, and thrillers.
Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month, or you can get it discounted through the Apple One bundle.
